Hector's Dolphins are the world's smallest dolphins. They are most common on the South Island's west coast and around Banks Peninsula.
There are about 7400, the main cause of decline is bycatch in set nets and trawl nets.
Usually found in small groups of 2-12, most often close to shore, they are very curious and are attracted to boats.
They reach maturity between 7-9 years and breed every 2-4 years. Their lifespan is about 20 years.
