This is a very nice 10 3/4" x 8 1/4" Menu for the French Line vessel Paquebot BRETAGNE, dated as May 21st 1937. Built for the Dutch Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd Line in 1922 as the FLANDRIA.....her Sister-ship was the ORANIA. From 1922 to 1936 she was on the South America - Amsterdam run..... this service was closed in 1936. She was purchased in May 1936 by the FRENCH LINE and renamed BRETAGNE....she was refurbished and in early 1937 was put on the Saint-Nazaire, Bordeaux and West Coast service. In April 1937, she ran aground in Punta Galera, near Puerto, Colombia, and had to be salvaged. She was torpedoed on 14 October, 1939, off Land's End, England, by the German submarine U-45, while operating in a convoy from Jamaica. . The vessel was evacuated and the survivors rescued by two British warships. FAIRLY RARE ITEM FROM A VESSEL WITH A RELATIVELY SHORT LIFE SPAN....just over 3 years as The Bretagne
