Jacques Anquetil (1934-1987)
In the modern era much is often made of France’s failure to win the Tour de France – that honour last going to Bernard Hinault in 1985.
But overall, France has won more Tours than any other country – 36 in total.
The pinnacle of these French achievements is owned by Jacques Anquetil, possibly France's greatest cyclist ever.
He was the first rider to win the Tour de France five times, and the only one to ever have the yellow jersey from day one right through to the end.
Foreshadowing the current tour-winning tactic of blitzing the field in the individual time trials, Anquetil’s time-trialing ability earned him the nickname "Monsieur Chrono". He won the hour record in 1956, beating Coppi’s record with a distance of 46.159km, and was known for mentally calculating what was required to beat his rivals on the road – his manager Raphaël Géminiani saying his head was like a computer.
Soigneur’s tribute jersey to Anquetil’s features his ‘Monsieur Chrono’ nickname, and is in the classic French tricolours blue, white and red.
