Claud Butler (1903–1978) was a London-based bicycle dealer and frame-builder, who from 1928 created one of the most successful chains of English bicycle-retail shops in the inter-war era.
Claud Butler cycles were known for features such as bronze-weld construction and decorative lugs. He sponsored international racers and his bikes were ridden at each year’s world championships between 1931 and 1934.
However, Claud Butler’s success rise was curtailed with the outset of World War II and the resultant drop-off in cycle racing events and even cycle-commuting. Claud Butler eventually declared bankruptcy in 1956.
Nonetheless, the bikes themselves were always lauded for their quality and in 1958 another classic UK brand, Holdsworth, purchased the Claud Butler brand. Claud Butler bicycles are still manufactured, but if you have a pre-1960’s original, this is the jersey for you.
